beach volleyball in Santa Monica

If you love to play beach volleyball, Santa Monica is a great place to do it. Courts are in great shape, and there are many available across our city.

There are always people ready to play beach volleyball, if you’re looking to join a game. Whether you want to get in on a novice game or join the many competitive matches any time of day, there are many great spots for you. If you’re meeting up with friends, be sure to get to the courts early to grab one for the day.

When you’re trying to decide where the best spots are to play beach volleyball in Santa Monica, here are our top picks.

Sorrento Beach

Sorrento Beach is the northernmost beach along Santa Monica State Beach. It is a historical spot in Santa Monica for beach volleyball, and it’s one of the hottest spots to play beach volleyball in Southern California. Many beach volleyball legends made Sorrento Beach their home, such as Jim Menges, Ron Van Hagen, and Sinjin Smith. It has been a destination for beach volleyball since the 1950s.

Sorrento Beach is just over a mile north of the Santa Monica Pier. Beginners and advanced players and teams are welcome, and games of all levels are played regularly. The sand is nice and shallow, allowing for easy jumping, and the courts are rope-lined.

Will Rogers State Beach

Will Rogers State Beach is located at 17700 Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, and it has over three miles of land and 103 acres. It is lined with plenty of volleyball courts to satisfy your need to play at any time of day, plus picnic tables are there to eat and rest on between games. It is a quieter destination for beach volleyball, which may be right up your alley.

Annenberg Community Beach House

Annenberg Community Beach House is a unique public destination for outdoor fun, with offerings like a splash pad, playground, pool, community events, and of course, beach volleyball. Located on the Santa Monica State Beach, it houses six beach volleyball courts that are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and you can check them out at Guest Services with a valid form of ID.

Courts are available year-round, and you can reserve a court up to four weeks in advance for $10/hour. They also offer volleyball classes through the City of Santa Monica. The nets are even adjustable and can be lowered for beach tennis.

The Annenberg Community Beach House is a great place to bring a party for beach volleyball fun or your family for a wide range of activities to do throughout the day.

Santa Monica State Beach

Beyond the beaches listed above, there are sand volleyball courts all across Santa Monica State Beach, both north and south of the Pier. They are available to the public daily, and courts are available first-come, first served. However, you can reserve them in advance. Simply email beach.permits@smgov.net or call (319) 458-2201 Ext 5186. Download the Beach Court Rental Application for more information.
